State of the Union Drinking Game

Well, I had planned to be all productive tonight…maybe do a trial recording of the Commodore News podcast, start some laundry, put the dishes away…

And then my boss points me to the State of the Union Drinking Game

Chris Abbot editorial

by Dave Ross

Over at Remix64, Chris Abbot has an editorial (Think for yourself – or else?) that touches on something that's been on my mind a lot lately, although in a much different context. Like Chris, I'm coming up on 30, and starting to have some revelations about the world. It's all part of the "growing up" process, I guess, but I hate how jaded I feel sometimes.

Anyway, here are the main nuggets of wisdom (IMHO) from this piece, with my own additions in [brackets]:

In essence, the last ten years has taught me this: no one is out to make you rich [or happy, or loved]. They are out to make themselves rich [or happy, or loved], and to use you as the tool. Any positive consequences to you are purely coincidental.

There was supposed to be a point here: which is to draw your own conclusions about important stuff. Don't be happy with what you've been told, but do your research. If someone tells you that you shouldn't be using that lead with that tune: use other's people's opinions, but don't just change it because the scene says "SID is bad" (which it reeeeally shouldn't), or because someone is quite vocal, unless you actually agree. If someone tells you that you must do something if you're to survive. Check it out. Because I can guarantee something: you're not being told the whole truth. Ever. And finding it out is very difficult. The truth is out there, but you have to make it yourself from the discarded bits of other people's opinions. Go get it, tiger.

Get Lamp

January 29, 2006 by Dave Ross

Apparently Jason Scott, creator of BBS: the Documentary, has a new project in the works. According to the web site, Get Lamp: the Text Adventure Documentary starts filming next month (February 2006). I'm definitely going to have to get a copy of this when it comes out.

Anyone interested in pre-ordering can join something called the Adventurers' Club and receive:

  • A copy of the BBS Documentary DVD, including shipping, sent immediately
  • Three copies of the DVD/product of GET LAMP, when finished
  • Your name in the credits of the GET LAMP Documentary
  • First reception of the finished project
