Random mp3 meme

June 30, 2006 by Dave Ross

Yay. A meme. Why do I do these again? Do I really think any of you care what's on my MP3 player?

Step 1. Put the mp3 player on random play all.
Step 2. List the first five songs that come up, adding commentary as desired.
NOTE: no cheating! Take the first five, no skipping, even if it is Barry Manilow, Hanson, or worse.

  1. The Moog Cookbook, "Whole Lotta Love" – Led Zepplin covered with vintage Moog synths sounds…muddy. I mean, The Moog cookbook is a novelty act anyway, but this song sounds particularly like a novelty. The lyrics have been stripped and you're just left with bassline grooves and a whiny high-pitched oscillator rolling out the melody. I think this song would be awesome with vocals. Even somebody singing into a vocoder would give this classic a little more of a human element.
  2. David Bowie, "The Prettiest Star" (Kinky Boots Soundtrack) — It's on the Kinky Boots soundtrack. Amy's the David Bowie fan. I usually skip past this one; it just doesn't do much for me. Interstingly, the lyrics sound like something off My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult's "13 Above the Night" album. Maybe if the music was a little more upbeat… Of the 10 gigs of music on my player, why did this one have to come up?
  3. Apoptygma Berserk, "25 Cromwell St." — A song about the case of Fred & Rosemary West and their "House of Horrors" in England. The song is dark, and rightly so. The line "you left your body in a prison cell before you went to Hell" stays with me for some reason. When they dig up your garden and find a bunch of bodies, what else is there to for you to do?
  4. Linkin Park, "Session" (Matrix Reloaded Soundtrack) — I thought having the music from the Matrix movies on my player would be cool, but I never really listen to them. They don't seem to work for me without the film. All the tracks sound…like they're off a soundtrack.
  5. Information Society "Move Out/CP Drill KKL" — I played this for an ex the night she moved out of her folks' house. I don't know why I felt like mentioning that. It's typical InSoc: simple lyrics, catchy synthpop music, and very danceable (dictionary.com says it's a word and that's good enough for me). Still, there are better tracks on this album ("Hack", the group's second album).

For the hackers out there

Last week, a generator fire destroyed the "island nation" of Sealand.

The king intends to rebuild.

Plan 9 the video game

June 27, 2006 by Dave Ross

I picked up the coolest thing off eBay the other day! It combines two of my hobbies — Ed Wood movies and Commodore computers. I'm now the proud owner of a sealed copy of the Plan 9 From Outer Space video game for Commdore Amiga computers (1 whopping meg of memory required).

I'm not 100% sure I want to leave it in the shrinkwrap, though. As neat as it is to know it's unopened, I've heard horror stories on AtariAge about shrinkwrap shrinking further over the years and crushing boxes.
