Follow-ups: I must be onto something

May 31, 2007 by Dave Ross

I can always count on LifeHack to validate my beliefs. That’s how they made it into my blogroll.

  • First, a post there (“Stress and You”) links to a great little write-up on adrenaline junkies.

    Are You An Adrenaline Junkie?
While there are plenty of legitimate reasons why one’s life can maintain a continual aura of drama, and the label ‘adrenaline junkie’ seems a bit harsh and final to pin on anyone (particularly oneself), the concept does provide an interesting angle through which to examine one’s life. While leading an exciting life in and of itself isn’t a problem, unwittingly creating crises for yourself or becoming needlessly engulfed in stressful situations can take its toll. If you tend to create more drama in your life than is necessary, the benefit of becoming aware of it is twofold:

    1. You can begin to keep things exciting, but take the ‘crisis edge’ off, paring down unnecessarily stressful activities and distinguishing the subtle difference between a true crisis and a somewhat overblown situation.
    2. You can practice relaxation techniques to reverse your body’s stress response when you find yourself overwhelmed so you don’t experience the full negative effects of chronic stress.

  • And yesterday they posted about “How Fear of Failure Destroys Success”.

Calm the fuck down

May 30, 2007 by Dave Ross

I was originally going to title this post “slow the fuck down”, but there’s more to it than that.

First off, there’s a new movement out there called Slow Programming. I’ve seen some traffic about it in the blogs I read, and I’m sure there’s more to come. The premise is simple: long, deliberate planning and long, deliberate development. In terms of the development, though, “long [and] deliberate” is relative due to all the planning beforehand.

In other words, it’s the antithesis of Agile Programming, which calls for a short design/planning cycle and short development “sprints” in order to adapt to changing requirements.
